What tests and preparation will I need?
At your first appointment, we examine your eyes and discuss which lens may suit you. Tell us about your daily activities—such as reading, computer work and driving—and the distances at which you need clear vision.
Our equipment includes the IOLMaster 700, which measures the eye and helps calculate the power of the replacement lens. See our examination equipment (in Korean).
An additional cataract examination for lens selection and ordering takes about one hour. Check how this fits into your appointment schedule.
Before the examination, stop wearing soft lenses for three days, hard lenses for seven days and orthokeratology lenses for one month. Arrange transport because dilation can affect driving. Use any preoperative eye drops as prescribed.
Tell us about any previous eye conditions or operations. Glaucoma, macular degeneration and other retinal conditions can affect whether a multifocal lens is suitable. Our guide to cataract lenses and everyday activities can help you prepare questions about your lens options.

How are the visits scheduled, and can both eyes be treated on the same day?
We usually treat one eye at a time and review it before treating the other. Before planning your stay in Seoul, confirm the dates for each operation and the check-ups after it.
| Part of the visit | SNU's planning estimate |
|---|---|
| Initial examination, consultation and medical assessment | About two hours |
| Additional cataract examination for lens selection and ordering | About one hour |
| Examination and surgery arranged for the same day | About four hours for that visit |
| Operation | About 15 minutes |
| Rest after surgery | About one hour, followed by another examination before going home |
The four-hour estimate covers a combined examination-and-surgery visit and overlaps with the other times listed above. Don't add all the rows together or assume that treatment for both eyes and all follow-up care will be completed that day.
What should I check in the quote and with my insurer?
Check which lens the quote covers and whether it is for one or both eyes. Ask about any separate charges for examinations, medicines and follow-up visits.
Coverage depends on your policy; check reimbursement with your insurer. If you need claim documents, tell the clinic before your visit.
To start planning, send an appointment request to SNU Eye Clinic with your travel dates, contact lens type and whether you are seeking an assessment for one or both eyes.
