What should I compare between lens options?
Implantable lenses can be placed in front of or behind the iris. When comparing options, find out which product each clinic is offering and where it will sit.
Our SNU FITTING assessment includes anterior segment OCT scans to measure the space inside your eye and help us choose the lens type and size.
At SNU, different examiners repeat and cross-check measurements. Before the lens size is finalised, we check the sizing calculation, discuss the plan with the patient and have the operating surgeon review it. Our lens examination process (in Korean) explains these checks.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Exact lens name and model | Which product am I being offered? |
| Planned lens position | Where will the lens sit inside my eye? |
| Lens size and the supporting measurements | How was the size chosen for my eye? |
| Plan for your prescription and astigmatism | What is the treatment intended to correct? |
| Follow-up | Which check-ups will I need, and how will they fit my travel plans? |
To assess whether lens surgery is suitable, we check whether there is enough space inside your eye. We also consider whether you rub your eyes often and whether your work puts you at risk of eye injury. Risks to discuss include glare, dry eye, infection, glaucoma, cataracts and loss of corneal endothelial cells. Your consultation should cover what these risks mean for you and the follow-up you will need.
For standard and toric ICL options, see our ICL examination and lens-planning guide. For a comparison with corneal laser surgery, see our ICL versus SMILE guide.
ICL sizing research
Dr. Chung Eui Sang co-authored a 2012 study of eye measurements and ICL sizing. Dr. Chung's profile (in Korean).
How can I confirm the exact lens I am being offered?
After ICL implantation at SNU, we issue an authenticity card for the genuine EVO ICL lens. Check which model is planned for each eye and keep the lens information with your surgery records. Our SNU ICL page (in Korean) explains the process.
If you have been offered a lens called KPL, Glaze or another name, bring its written product details to the consultation. Ask the clinic offering it for the manufacturer's name, exact model and product documentation so you know which lens you are comparing.
To request an ICL consultation, include your prescription if known, your dates in Korea and the exact names of any lenses you would like to discuss.
